George, Miles & Buhr, LLC (GMB) was contracted to provide design services to the Wicomico County Department of Corrections to design a roof replacement at the Wicomico County Detention Center, in Salisbury, Maryland. This project is divided into three phases, each of which consists of the complete removal of the existing roof membrane system (ballast, membrane, cover board, flashing, and coping) and the installation of a loose laid EPDM membrane with paver ballast with a 20-year warranty and new flashing and coping on all parapet walls.
GMB provided the following design services:
- Site visits to confirm the accuracy of existing roof plan drawings to verify the locations of mechanical units, piping, and penetrations.
- Performed multiple tests on the existing roof including membrane adhesion tests and pull tests on the existing lightweight insulating concrete roof deck in accordance with ANSI/SPRI IA-1 uplift testing.
- Assisted the County in determining the roof membrane that would best suit their needs. The loose-laid EPDM system with ballasted pavers was selected to reduce the amount of demolition required (thereby reducing costs) while still meeting the governing building code (2015 IBC). The selected system meets the requirements of the ANSI/SPRI RP-4 2013 Wind Design Standard for Ballasted Single Ply Roofing which is referenced by the 2015 IBC.
- Preparation of roof plan drawings and specifications indicating requirements for the roof replacement suitable for bidding and construction. Details included roofing construction at penetrations and parapet walls.
