The City Hall expansion project in Lewes, Delaware consisted of an 8,198 square-foot addition and a complete restoration of the existing 9,593 square-foot facility. A majority of the new addition is used to house the Lewes Board of Public Works (BPW). The City Council chambers have also been expanded by 504 square feet. The increased space eliminated the over-crowding of City and BPW staff, provided the necessary space for Council and BPW public meetings, and upgraded the entire facility operationally in terms of ease of bill payment, improved constituent access, and greater meeting space.
The project was completed in three (3) phases. The BPW and Council Chambers additions were constructed in phase 1. Upon completion, the City and BPW staff were temporarily relocated into the new addition while the existing City Hall was renovated in phase 2. Upon completion of those renovations, the City staff moved back into the rehabilitated space and the Police Department temporarily relocated into the BPW addition until Phase 3 improvements to the existing Police facility were complete. The project was completed in approximately 20 months and concluded during the Fall of 2009.
GMB worked closely with the City, BPW, and the Police Department to address their needs and meet their goals for this major project. GMB’s coordination with the City regarding the construction phasing was detailed and necessary to keep the City in operation during the construction phase of this project.
GMB continues to provide ongoing analysis of the current space and usage needs of this facility. In 2019, GMB assisted the City with options analysis for rearranging staff locations, including minor wall and partition work. GMB provided sketches for reconfiguring the ground level of City Hall within the City’s area of business.
In 2021 GMB assisted the City with programming and schematic design services for renovations to the Lewes City Hall Police Department. This effort included reconfiguration of Police Department areas and departments, HVAC upgrades, and lighting.
