The City of Lewes, Delaware contracted GMB to remove approximately 13,500 sq. ft. of worn, existing cedar decking and replace it with 5/4 x 6 Ipe decking at the city docks, fishing pier, and Net House on the Rehoboth-Lewes Canal, adjacent to the Lewes Canalfront Park.
GMB developed the design plans for the project and provided construction administration services as well. During construction, it was determined that additional areas of the dock had faced damage over time including the caps of timber piles, deck edging, and sections of wood framing. The timber pile caps were repaired using structural epoxy and the other damaged sections were replaced. In addition, the park gazebo was redecked at the request of the city.
Considering the popular recreational and community use of the area, it was imperative that the project be completed swiftly. Given the short time frame for both design and construction, GMB advised that the Ipe decking material be procured under a separate contract to ensure that it would be ready for installation upon the selection of a contractor. GMB facilitated the procurement and storage of the material. The contractor mobilized the material in March, and the decking was completed before the Memorial Day Weekend in May. The project reached its final completion in October.
