Completed in 2005, Phase 1 of this Chincoteague, Virginia facility improvement project received $145,000 in grant funds from the Virginia Saltwater Recreational Fishing Development Fund (VSRFDF). The joint project between the Town of Chincoteague, the Virginia Port Authority and VSRFDF included such improvements as the breakwater, bulkheading, finger piers, handicapped floating pier, fish cleaning station, collector piers and a paved parking lot area. This location gives boating access to Chincoteague Bay, as well as other seaside Eastern Shore inlets and bays and the Atlantic Ocean. GMB provided engineering services for the Town of Chincoteague to include:
- Assisted with funding research for the VSRFDF Grant Application
- Design of replacement of the existing perimeter bulkhead
- Design of additional mooring space and/or maximization of existing mooring space
- Design of replacement/repairs to existing finger piers and mooring poles
- Design of floating dock system
- Provided bid documents
In 2008, GMB was again contracted by the Town of Chincoteague to prepare the Phase 2 Harbor Improvements mostly related to interior upgrades including the following:
- New 240-foot long by 6-foot wide pier
- Including 16-foot by 10-foot L-head
- Including 225-foot breakwater
- 30-foot bulkhead addition
- Extend existing pier on west side of Harbor to 450 feet with 450-foot breakwater
- Contaminant curtain
- Day marker at Harbor entrance
- Dredge approximately 3,000 cubic yards of the Harbor’s bottom
