GMB Wins ACEC-MD Honor Award for Hampstead WWTP ENR Project

We are proud to announce that we were selected to receive a 2023 Engineering Excellence Honor Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Maryland (ACEC-MD) for the Hampstead Wastewater Treatment Plant ENR Upgrade project in Carroll County, Maryland.
The Town of Hampstead and its surrounding region are designated growth areas in Carroll County, but development was limited by temperature restrictions and the resolution of a Clean Water Act Consent Judgement at the 0.9-mgd Hampstead WWTP.
In 2013, Carroll County initiated an engineering planning and design program with GMB to alleviate these restrictions. After 5 years of comprehensive planning, design, and negotiations, the Consent Judgement was on a path to resolution and the NPDES permit was renewed to allow for the Hampstead ENR Upgrade Project to proceed.
The required improvements included ENR nutrient treatment, split outfall discharge, retiring an old, failing industrial WWTP, an Alternative Effluent Limit for temperature, and improvements to the Deep Run and Piney Run watersheds.
As a result of this project, development in the County’s designated growth areas has been rejuvenated and environmental resources such as Piney Run and Deep Run in Carroll County have been preserved.
